The Newest Addition to the Head Start Program: STEM is Here!

Over the past few weeks, we’ve had the opportunity to partner with students from Transylvania University’s Writing For and With Nonprofits 2026 May Term class as they learned about and helped showcase the impact of our new STEM initiative in Head Start. We’re excited to share their work with you over the next few days.

The classroom is lined with objects waiting to be explored. Colored blocks sit beside pinecones and seashells. A sandbox rests in the corner near tubs of polished rocks and small tools. Morning light pours through the windows while birds chirp and swoon. Everything in the room invites curiosity.

The door swings open, and children spill into the STEM lab with quiet excitement. They form a line at the sink, carefully washing their hands while teachers observe nearby. One child shifts impatiently from foot to foot, barely containing his excitement as he waits for his turn. Once their hands are clean, the children slip into miniature lab coats and gather around the table covered with boxes and flashlights.

The students spring into action, shining lights into the boxes. The young explorers quickly notice that some backdrops appear empty while others create strange silhouettes along the walls and ceiling. Confusion soon turns into amazement as teachers introduce the concept of shadows. Small voices fill the room with excited “oooohs” and “aaaahs” while flashlights flicker across the table. Pinecones, toy blocks, and tiny objects are lifted into the beams of light as students experiment for themselves, discovering how shapes and light work together. With a newfound understanding of the world around them, the children beam with pride.

This type of active exploration defines the Council’s Head Start STEM program. Rather than relying on traditional lectures, the program encourages children to practice hands-on, play-based learning. STEM became a major priority after assessment data revealed that many students were struggling in early math and science development. The initiative was designed not only to improve academic readiness but also to foster an environment where curiosity drives learning from an early age.

Every day in the STEM lab follows this same philosophy. Teachers introduce concepts briefly before allowing students to investigate independently through interactive activities and stations. Children build marble tracks, sort colorful rocks, experiment with earthquake simulators, and explore sensory materials like sand and water. Instead of interrupting discovery, teachers observe and guide students when necessary, allowing children to learn through direct experience and engaging play.

The program supports development in far more than science alone. Students strengthen early problem-solving abilities while improving fine motor skills through building, sorting, and manipulating tools. Group activities encourage children to share materials, take turns, and collaborate with classmates, helping them build confidence socially as well as academically. Structured routines such as handwashing, cleaning up, and following directions also reinforce responsibility and independence. Most importantly, the STEM lab helps children feel confident in their ability to ask questions, explore ideas, and succeed while learning.

Even when the day is done, the effects of the STEM Lab on kids are long-lasting. Clean-up time comes quickly, and each child thoughtfully puts away their equipment. Playtime leaves them in cheerful, talkative moods; each child can’t wait to discuss what they did with their friends. They line up with uncontainable glee to wash their hands and turn in their lab coats. With joy and newfound curiosity, these future doctors and mathematicians dart out of the room, one by one. Enthusiastic smiles are shared by the teachers with the students. Inspiration blossoms in everyone.

Teachers have noticed these changes clearly since the program began. Students are more engaged, more curious, and more willing to participate in class activities. One instructor, Shantai, explained, “Allowing them to see what they’d like to be when they grow up… this allows them to think outside the box and think ‘oh I could be a scientist, oh I could be an engineer!’” For educators, each STEM lab represents an investment in a child’s future. Teachers carefully design activities that connect to real-world experiences so that students continue to ask questions, search for answers, and imagine new possibilities. Sparking lifelong interest in highly skilled, professional fields has been one of the greatest joys for these teachers.

Without strong early instruction, children can easily fall behind before they ever enter elementary school. The STEM environment created by the Council gives children the opportunity to turn curiosity into confidence and imagination into opportunity. Through every flashlight experiment, marble track, and discovery-filled lesson, students begin building the foundation for future learning. It is special. It is practical. It is STEM.
